Mozila releases Firefox 3.6 alpha version

Mozilla has released the first alpha version of Firefox 3.6, a browser with speed improvements and new features the organization hopes to finalize faster than its predecessor.

Firefox 3.6  is built on pre-release version of the Gecko 1.9.2 platform, which forms the core of rich internet applications such as Firefox.

“Unlike the year that passed between Firefox 3 and Firefox 3.5, we expect that this 3.6 release will be released in a few months,” Mozilla evangelist Chris Blizzard said in a blog post Friday.

Firefox 3.6, code-named Namoroka, has a variety of changes, but it’s not as dramatic a departure as 3.5 was from 3.0. Among the 3.6 features are faster JavaScript, the Web programming language Firefox executes with its TraceMonkey engine; faster page-rendering speed; some new features for CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) technology for controlling some of the look of a Web site; and a feature called the compositor that handles complicated layout circumstances better.

More on Namoroka Alpha 1

This release is intended for developers and testers only.

Google Voice to be a Web App

Even though Apple prevented it from listing Google Voice on the iPhone App Store, Google is planning on retooling the application as a Web-based app, according to The New York Times.

Google has already found a loophole:

Already, Google says it is readying a replacement for the Google Voice app that will offer exactly the same features as the rejected app–except that it will take the form of a specialized, iPhone-shaped Web page. For all intents and purposes, it will behave exactly the same as the app would have; you can even install it as an icon on your Home screen.

Google Voice is a free application that lets users assign a single number to ring their home, work, and cell phones, and also get voice mail as text transcriptions. Google Voice allows cheap international calls and free text messages.

It’s not clear if simply making Google Voice available as a Web app will change Apple’s mind, but there is precedent. Apple also rejected Google’s Latitude for the iPhone until it was remade as Web app.

Targeted Twitter user blames Russia

The Georgian blogger whose Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube accounts were targeted in denial-of-service attacks on Thursday, says he thinks Russia’s federal security service is behind it.

“This hackers was from Russian KGB,” the blogger, who uses “Cyxymu” on his accounts, wrote in a tweet early on Friday, adding later: “My twitter is online! Thank you all for support after ciber attack from Russia!”

Because of the difficulty in tracing distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks back to the source, unless someone takes credit for the attack or brags about it to online associates, it’s nearly impossible to determine exactly who was responsible.

Cyxymu is identified as a 34-year-old economics lecturer named Georgy from Tblisi, Georgia, by The Guardian. His blog postings are critical of Russia’s dealings with the Caucasus region and his screen name is a Latinized version of the spelling of Sukhumi, the capital of Abkhazia, a breakaway Georgian republic.

“Maybe it was carried out by ordinary hackers but I’m certain the order came from the Russian government,” he is quoted as saying. His LiveJournal account was attacked last year, as well, according to the report.

The DDoS attacks came on the eve of the one-year anniversary of a significant military clash between Russia and Georgia, which have had an ongoing conflict. In the 2008 South Ossetia war that began on August 7, 2008, Georgia attempted to retake control of South Ossetia and Russia launched air strikes against Georgia.

Google launches 12 social gadgets

Google launched 12 social gadgets that let users share information, play games and collaborate with friends. This is the next step in Google’s progressive move to socialize its Web services using its OpenSocial APIs

Facebook has been allowing its users to connect via applications since it launched its developer platform more than two years ago. Thousands of apps on Facebook has been build since then, allowing users to throw virtual sheep and host zombie wars.

IGoogle Master

Google has been woefully far behind in leveraging the APIs itself against the OpenSocial-based Friend Connect apps announced here and there for the last few years. By the release of these social gadgets, the company is showing it is ready to open things up a bit more in this vein.

New gadgets include GoComics, YouTube and News.com.au, as well as gaming gadgets Chess, Who Has the Biggest Brain and the New York Times Crossword gadget. There is also a new ToDo task management gadget.

First iPhone 3GS Spy software rolled out

Retina-X Studios, LLC,  has recently announced the immediate availability of Mobile Spy version 3.0 for the recently released Apple iPhone 3GS. This unique spy software is able to enable users to silently track GPS locations, SMS messages and calls of children or employees using a secure online control panel. Sounds as though one’s privacy has been violated, but then again parents ought to have better control and keep tabs on their kids instead of leaving them to the nanny, TV and peers throughout the formative years.

Mobile Spy will operate in complete stealth mode and there won’t be any mention of the program whatsoever on the iPhone 3GS. The software will quietly run in the background behind all other applications. The moment the software is set up, it will get to work straightaway without the need for any prompting, silently recording the entire text of all SMS text messages, information about each call and actual GPS positions.

All logged activities will be silently uploaded to the user’s secure online account, where these accounts can be securely checked online from virtually any web browser without the need to access the handset. All activity logs can be viewed in real time the moment they are recorded including complete texts and maps of GPS positions. Mobile Spy is compatible with all iPhone models and smartphones powered by Windows Mobile or the Symbian OS operating system.
